You can create harmony even with objectsThe Pig (also known as the Boar) has gotten some flack in the stories of the Chinese zodiac for getting last place. And yet it is now the year of the Pig, and people are scrambling to have children this year in order to bring great wealth and success. Why is that so? Because this Chinese lunar year, starting February 18, 2007 and ending on February 6, 2008, the piggie is golden.

What does that mean? Well, for starters one must understand the concept of elements. If you have ever read into feng shui, then you might be familiar with the idea that nearly everything has an element assigned to it. Either water, fire, metal, wood, or earth–the position and angle of your bed, the arrangement of your room, even colors and material objects are all assigned an element. Simply put, everything has something that a.) creates harmony with it, b.) reacts against it, or c.) enhances it. Elements are also applied to the Chinese calendar. Depending on the year, the animal gets assigned a different element.

So how does a year turn into a golden one for a zodiac? Well, it gets more complicated. There are a variety of Chinese calendars that are consulted together, resulting in many more elemental-zodiac combinations. There are certain instances in which the resulting harmony between the elements and the zodiac create a “Golden” year for an animal, and that year becomes very auspicious for those born into it. The Golden Pig arrives every 600 years. Since the Pig is considered high in monetary luck, the year of the Golden Pig makes it even more so.
