Claim to Fame: In the race to determine their zodiac ranking, the Monkey arrived as part of a trio who helped each other get across the riverbank. Together, they overcame several obstacles and concocted a raft to get across river. The Monkey was named 9th as the second part of this trio.

Personality
Monkeys are seen as very intelligent and psychologically perceptive. They can read other people very well and have a keen sense of awareness of their surroundings. People born in the year of the Monkey are perceived as quite clever, but with a low attention span and thus will always seem restless. They are good at businesses because of their high skill in problem-solving. Monkeys also have a good range of different talents. Their downside is that their fickleness and short attention span can be taken by some as arrogance or vanity.

Elements
The Monkey zodiac is governed by the Metal element, which has qualities of self-reliance and high-strung emotions. because 2016 will be the year of the Fire element, there will be a lot of conflicts during the year since Fire destroys Metal. Water Monkeys will also have it tough because Water’s natural tendency to destroy Fire will be reversed. Wood and Earth Monkeys will have a better year since Fire is a product of Wood and Earth is generated by Fire.

Tomorrow: The last out of a trio of animals that helped each other get across the bank: The Rooster!

*Because the Chinese calendar runs on lunar cycles, each year starts and ends on a different date. Therefore, if you were born in January or early February, your zodiac animal might be different that you had originally thought. Fortunately there are tables and websites that will help you find out exactly which one you are!

**Since the zodiac animals also are associated with certain months and seasons, one can have an “inner” zodiac animal. For example, I was born in the year of the Ox (1985), but I was born in the Pig’s month (November). So the Pig is my inner zodiac animal. You can further break this down by the exact hour you were born, which gives you your “secret” animal.
