How-To: Keep Up With Your Hobbies

my desk!If you’re a young adult, chances are you struggle to keep up with your hobbies while trying to be responsible with schooling and a working. Here are tips I found useful in devoting time to my many hobbies (drawing, reading, blogging, etc…!) while keeping up with my school work at the same time.

1.) Organize
When things are in their place, you can focus properly on the task at hand. Study a little feng shui to get an idea of how just re-organizing your room can help you become more productive. Keep your desk clear and clean up after projects so that the next day you have free space to work on.

3.) Schedule
Chances are you grew up in a school system that revolved around regular scheduling. Everything was in timed increments. I realized that whenever I had a long break that I intended to get some drawing in, the vacation would fly by and I would have nothing to show for it. Once I started writing things down in one hour-increments, it was easy for me to get a bunch of stuff done in a day. It’s a little weird to write down basic things like “read!” and “draw!” but seriously, if I didn’t do it that way I would probably never fit them into my day. You would be amazed how much you could get done in one hour. I use this one-hour increment tactic to limit my internet surfing time as well. Set up a timer or a buzzer that will let you know when the hour’s up so you can fully devote yourself to your tasks without having to check the time.

3.) Don’t watch TV
TV is nothing but a box that tries to sell you things. TV itself consists of entertainment that revolves around increments of time–thus making it easy for you to watch it for hours straight. TV messes with your mind and spends your money. If you have to watch some TV, only watch your favorite programs and then turn the TV off when the show is over. Don’t channel surf in hopes of “finding something” to watch. Use that surfing time to devote yourself to your hobby. It’s not worth kicking yourself at the end of the day because “all you did was go to school and work.”

These are just some really basic habits that I found myself forming after I made a new year’s resolution to get organized and spend more time with my hobbies. I highly endorse the GTD (Getting Things Done) ideology. Here are some links I found useful for the GTD lifestyle:
